The 17th of Tammuz marks other calamities in Jewish history as well. It is the date on which Moses, having descended from Mount Sinai and seeing the people sinning with the Golden Calf, broke the first set of Ten Commandments. In addition, the priests of the First Temple era were forced on this day – a year before the Temple’s destruction – to stop offering the daily sacrifice due to the shortage of sheep.

The Temple itself was holy and the resting place of Hashem. It is not that Hashem’s presence was not found anywhere else, it was that the Temple was were man was able to communicate with Hashem . There is holiness in the world and Eretz Yisrael is the holiest land and Yerushalayim is the holiest city. The Temple Mount is the holiest mountain and the Holy of Holies in the Temple was the holiest place on Earth.
The Western wall is the only remaining wall that was indeed a retaining wall of the mountain. See, the Temple Mount was not flat and in order to build the Temple on top the area had to be flattened. A platform was made and in order to strengthen the platform walls were put up.
IF the Temple was still built the Western Wall would have no importance but since it is the only remaining wall closest to the place of the Holy of Holies, it has been a place for prayer since the destruction of the Temple 2,000 years ago.
It is unfortunate that some Jews mistakenly say the Western Wall is the holiest place for the Jews. That is an inaccurate statement that stems from ignorance. In tradition it is said that the presence of God does not leave the Western Wall but that was written after the destruction of the Temple itself.
