Oscars and Diversity

When I saw this picture of Prince throughout the years, it made me smile.  On this last day of Black History Month, I want to honor all the African American artists that have had an impact on my life.  There are too many to list, but Prince was the first, I was new to America, he was all over the radio, and my first concert when I was 12.  He is so unique, diverse, androgynous, and such an amazing performer.  He was not on the Oscar’s last night, but many talented artists were honored and Chris Rock was perfect at making it fun while making a point about diversity in the industry.

It was nice to see Native Americans, Latino’s, and Asian Americans on the show, as well as other countries honored.  Yesterday I wrote about the sensitive topic of abuse, and last night the movie Spotlight won best picture, as well as Vice President Biden introducing Lady Gaga and all the survivors of college campus abuse, asking everyone to stand for consent.

In this crazy world of fanfare and excess, when artists use their celebrity for helping our world and humanity, it makes me smile.
